In September 2002, Hanson plc and the Dungates Estate invited people on a tour of Buckland's hidden sandpits: Tapwood (north of the A25) and Park Pit (south of the A25). Sand is still quarried from Tapwood, and processed in part of Park Pit. The majority of Park Pit is being restored to an arboretum, and there is a long-term plan to allow access to the public as a recreational area. CLICK on the THUMBNAIL PICTURES BELOW to enlarge. Tapwood Pit The second picture shows a cliff with sand martin nesting holes. In the 1970's the pit was used for an episode of Dr Who. There's a Dalek round the corner. Park Pit The sand processing equipment and processed sand in Park pit, and the reclaimed lake. The picture on the right show Dungates Farm - as not often seen. Lawrence Lane An example of a sandpit of the 1950's just off Lawrence Lane, now reclaimed. The lake is used for a fishing club. Crayfish shrimps - first introduced as a food for trout, are now farmed to grow to maturity and sold in Buckland Village shop in season. Here they show a wonderful bronze colouring.
