Reigate-residents Carla Powell and Tom Gill, Founders and Directors of East African Playgrounds in 2009, started their charity after spending several months working and travelling around East Africa. They were impressed with the community’s love for sports and the children’s ability to turn anything into a toy or football. However they saw that people’s enthusiasm for sports and play was not matched with facilities or resources. On returning back to the UK to finish their respective degrees they decided to develop the idea that through UK volunteers and community involvement in East Africa, they could provide schools in East Africa with the facilities, resources and training to give children the opportunity to benefit from sports and play.

Our ‘core’ charity is Money for Madagascar. This is a small but productive concern that spends 96% of its income on supporting the people of an extremely poor country that does not receive a great deal of outside support; the charity sponsors projects to provide people with the skills necessary to earn a living. When we have a talk, the proceeds go to the charity nominated by the speaker.
