Pond & Green Maintenance

Buckland Parish Council is responsible for the upkeep of the Village Green and the Pond. Each year the pond is cleared of invasive vegetation by village volunteers, supported by Reigate Area Conservation Volunteers and co-ordinated by the Parish Council.  This year's pond clearance is planned for Sunday 3 October 2010.

New Trees Planted on the Green

The 2002 celebrations of the Queen's Golden Jubilee had a small fund left, and a 'Rosebud cherry' (Prunus subhirtella autumnalis), which flowers pink in mid-Spring, was selected to commemorate the event. The Prunus subhirtella, which was planted on 6 December 2003, continues to thrive and grow.

Green Trees

Two of the old Hawthorn trees on the north side of the pond have split trunks and are dying.  The Parish Council purchased two young sapling hawthorns (Crataegus laevigata rosea plena), also planted on 6 December 2003, and planned  to remove the older trees once the new saplings had become established. Unfortunately one of the new hawthorns was vandalised and the other died. There has been discussion as to replacing them, but, it is proving difficult to know where to site their replacements as placing them in the exact same position may bestow on them the same fate as the others.

Pond Clearance

Pond Clearance is an Annual event and will next take place on Sunday 26th September 2010.

The Buckland Flagpole

The Buckland flagpole was donated by Paul Rietchel for the 2002 Jubilee Celebrations. This new feature on the Village Green was welcomed by the residents and it was decided to retain the flagpole with Paul agreeing to be flag warden.
